October BDC Challenge Entries

The October BDC Challenge focused on a slightly different character from the Firefly series - the ever popular Wash dinosaurs!

This chain bracelet is representing Wash's dinosaurs in little wooden figures. They are shown with trees because who can forget Wash brushing the trees off of the sonar.

Curse Your Sudden but Inevitable Betrayal by Gypsyharte


"Mine is an evil Laugh!
I think we should shall call it your grave! Now die!"

A candy bright green T-Rex and a zesty yellow Stegosaur hand sculpted out of high quality polymer clay earrings. Coated with acrylic glaze with shiny results! A little asymmetrical, but hey some people like that. Whimsical and geeky, they are a fitting tribute to our favorite spaceship pilot.

The T-Rex is approx 1 1/2" tall x 1" wide The Stego is 2" long x 1" wide. They are made of the made of the same amount of clay, so one shouldn't be heavier than the other. They come with French style hypo-allergenic ear wires.

October BDC Challenge

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

By a sizeable margin, Wash's Dinos are the winners for the October BDC Challenge.

So get out your imagination capes. What can you do with dinos? Or better yet what would Wash do with his dinos if he was the crafty sort?

Maybe you can make something Zoe would have picked up for Wash and his favorite play things. Or Maybe River snuck into the bridge and did something unique with the dinos.

Badsnail decided to make a "dumb ass stick sounds like it's rainin'."

It may not make the rain come, but at least it sounds like rain. It looks and feels pretty cool, too! 17-1/4" long and approximately 7-1/2" around. It's pretty sturdy, but if it does start to rain, I'd cover it (in other words - don't get it wet).

Decapitated Dollies - Jayne Cobb - Crocheted Plush Head by scarywhitegirl



While Jayne Cobb lived through the series Firefly and the movie Serenity, he is, as Simon says, in a dangerous line of work. While scarywhitegirl leaves Jayne's cause of decapitation deliberately vague, there's no denying that he's awfully cute when his head is disconnected from his body.

Jayne has dark brown hair (including a mustache and goatee) and hazel green eyes. He wears his signature hat that his ma made for him.

Each Decapitated Dollie comes with his or her very own "death certificate," which lists his or her name, date of death, and cause of death. The back of each "death certificate" is made of patterned cardstock- i n the case of this set, the cardstock is black with silver skulls and bones, arranged in hexagons.

Frippery by inlerah


"Say, look at the fluffy one!"

Kaylee, one of inerlah's favorite characters, sees a frilly pink dress in a store window and falls in love with its layers of ruffles. This yarn was inspired by the dress itself, and also by the idea of embracing your inner girly-girl.

Spun from a beautiful batt of superwash wool blended with white glitz (from fellow etsyian terrabellaspun), this yarn changes gradually from cream to pink to raspberry. It has been plied with 1 strand of pearl metallic thread and 1 strand of white laceweight mohair to add more sparkle and create a soft and beautiful yarn.

Shindig by omshanti


Inara: Are you in pain?
Mal: Absolutely, I got stabbed you know, right here.
[lifts shirt to show a bloodstained bandage on side of abdomen]
Inara: I saw.
Mal: I don't care much for fancy parties. Too rough.
Inara: It wasn't entirely a disaster.
Mal: [lifts his shirt again] I got stabbed. Right here.

This beautiful necklace is another Firefly reference, but this time it's taken a piece directly from the show - the necklace Inara wears during the duel where Mal gets stabbed 'right here'.

Amethyst beads a full 10 mm in diameter form the drops in the front, separated and set off by smaller quartz beads. Depending from them are small brass bells which chime gently as you move - perhaps to dance?

The necklace itself is made up of smaller amethyst beads, along with the quartz, and will cling close to your throat at 17" long. It's held in place by a signature handmade clasp.

Ice Planet Pop by scarywhitegirl


"My food is problematic."

As fans of Firefly, you'll probably recognize this item right away. It's a reproduction of the "ice planet" that River and Book eat (or try to eat) in the episode "The Message." Although this version isn't edible, it would make for a pretty sweet prop if you plan to cosplay as River (or Book, I suppose).

The planet itself is crocheted from a yarn containing wool (70% acrylic, 20% wool, 10% nylon), and stuffed with fiberfill. The string is braided cotton yarn, with small paper stars glued onto the string. The stick is a square shaped dowel rod.

The ice planet measures 10 1/2" (27 cm) at the largest point of its circumference. The dowel rod is 12" long (30.5 cm).

The 4 ice planets are made from paper mâché which have been painted white and coated with a generous helping of glitter. Each ice planet is hung on cotton cording, strung with painted wooden stars. River Tam Plush Character by lizstaley


How adorable! A sweet little River Tam plushie, complete with a removable Ice Planet!

The body is made from tan buttersuede fabric and her hair is dark brown buttersuede. She's stuffed with all-new polyester fiberfill and her facial features are painted on with black, brown, and white acrylic paint. River is wearing a cute pink dress and matching shrug. Her Ice Planet is a white pom-pom strung on a double strand of thread and then adorned with a red, yellow, and blue felt star and glued inside of a light brown felt "stick". The cool Ice Planet treat attaches to her arm with a loop of elastic.

In addition, River's clothes are actually removable, so if you're handy with a needle and thread (or know someone who is!), you could make her an entire wardrobe! Her current dress is hand-stitched and not lined, but her shrug jacket is fully lined with matching fabric and machine stitched.

Being that it is sweltering in most parts of the US right now, it's very appropriate that the Ice Planet is July's Challenge theme for the BDC Team.

I was really excited when the theme for June's BDC Challenge was announced - Inara. I just knew that some really gorgeous things would be made - and I wasn't disappointed! Check out how Inara inspired some Big Damn Crafters' members.

Into the Black by Figments


The necklace is a beautiful combination of black Czech glass e-beads, small opalite beads and 4 small pewter star shaped beads strung on 18.5" of tiger tail bead cord. Hanging from a lovely Tierra Cast lead-free pewter bail is a stunning focal of carved black cinnabar and two opalite beads on a silver tone headpin. The cinnabar is carved in an Oriental pattern and measures 5/8" across. The pendant portion hangs 1 1/8" below the main strand of the necklace.

Unification Day Necklace by NightMaiden


A large open heart with a scrollwork design surrounds a planet charm symbolizing the unification of the planets.

Circular ceramic beads and the small black ceramic bead that is inside are offset with "chicken blood stone" (symbolizing the blood that was spilled in the war) and small wooden beads.

This necklace measure approx. 16" in length and is finished with a silver plated magnetic clasp. The heart is approx. 2" in width with a drop of approx. 2 1/2".

My challenge piece is in rememberance of the sacrifices the Independents made, a field of brown flowers to signify the Browncoats, and red roses for the bloody battles fought.

Serenity Now by lunaarcana


Instead of celebrating such an unhappy thing such as U-Day, lunaarcana decided to concentrate on the fact that Hope is still alive and to make a beaded charm for each member of the crew.

The charm bracelet is silver plated C chain, which will keep it's sparkle. There are cultured pearls in shades of steel and platinum (which are rough around the edges, just like our Browncoats!), Czech glass beads in shades of Topaz and steel blue. There are black diamond Swarovski crystals as well as sterling silver rounds to add just the right touch of "shiny".

You Can't Take the Sky, A Limited Edition Digital Collage ACEO by scarywhitegirl


The title of the piece, "You Can't Take the Sky," is from the theme song for Firefly. The words are also echoed in the text on the card, which is printed across a bright blue sky with a texture of dry, cracked earth. At the lower right, a woman's back bears the Chinese characters for "Serenity," which is both the name of the ship and the feeling that the blue skies can invoke.

This is a limited edition digital collage ACEO, created in Photoshop. The edition will be limited to 9 prints. The first of these will be donated to the Arizona Browncoats for the raffle at their Serenity Forever/Equality Now! screening of "Serenity" this year. Facade by ladyartisan


This journal is 8.5" x 5.5" (214mm x 139mm) and is a limp binding using a longstitch/kettlestitch combination. This book has 8 separate sections with 8 different types of paper, making it a wonderful art, travel, or writing journal. There are a total of 148 pages (counting each side as 1 page) and paper types include 4 different colors of Canson Mi Teintes pastel paper, a green text weight paper, a heavyweight Mulberry paper that's smooth on 1 side and rough on the other, and 2 different colors of Lokta paper, both with a wonderful aged look to them.

The cover on this journal is unbacked, quilted fabric in a lovely, silvery-grey color with dark ice-blue embroidered oriental dragons/designs on the outside.

Some days, all she could remember was the darkness. At night, she saw rocks splashed with blood. She ran a finger over the small scrap of brown fabric she kept hidden from the Alliance and cried. Happy Unification Day.

Mocca Swarovski crystals nestle in black agate and brecciated jasper, a hint of brown shimmering in a sea of red and black. Lead-free open-work pewter beads, pen shell heishi, and a zinc pendant complete the memory. This hand-crafted 22" necklace closes with a toggle clasp in back.

He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor...
He stood up to the man and he gave him what for...

What better way to represent "Jaynestown" than with falling money....

A silver dollar sign dangles precariously from green square cat eye beads. The taper design really does look like money falling from the sky... The brown cat eye beads are almost the color of mud, the "mudders" own resource. The necklace measures approx. 17 1/4" in length and the drops are approx. 1/2", 1 1/4", and 3" in taper order. This piece is finished with a silver plated magnietic clasp.

Hero of Canton - Handspun Yarn by inlerah


This 100% hand-dyed wool yarn plied with metallic thread is a blend of natural dark brown, representing the mudders, and muted shades of orange, gold and rust (which are the colors inlerah associates with Jayne, even though he didn't yet have his infamous hat in this episode). The wool is plied with gold metallic thread for the money Jayne inadvertantly gave to the people of Canton, thus cementing his hero status.

The Man They Call Jayne - An ACEO by Figments


Jayne Cobb, tough man, mercenary, hero????? Well, according to the Mudders he is. Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t, that is up to the fans to decide I guess. But love him or hate him, Jayne is an integral part of the crew of Serenity and a real character.

This ACEO is made using a heavy gold color backed stock with a textured light brown colored light card stock on the other. A stamped brass gun, an oriental "coin", paper money, a bit of sheet music and a miniature version of Shepherd Book’s Bible as "fixed" by River complete this piece. This piece has been signed, numbered and dated on the back.

ACEO- 068 Hero- Original by lizstaley


This ACEO is an original, NOT a reproduction. It's done on a heavy, lightly textured illustration board with ink, Prismacolor markers and watercolor.

This is lizstaley's take on a scene from "Jaynestown" - Wash, Jayne, Simon, Mal, and Kaylee come across a statue of Jayne while visiting a little mud-farming planet called Canton. Seems that Jayne is a "bonafide folk hero" on Canton - complete with a song that's popular in the local bars! Card has been signed and dated on the back by me.

She might be a phenom mechanic, but she's still a frilly-loving girl! A pink glass flower (with an opalescent interior and a little green glass leaf), tiny pink beads to match and a wrench. Yes, that's right... a wrench, complete with Chinese writing (and made in China on the back). The wrench slides so the flower can be worn at the top or the bottom. Finished off with a sterling silver spring ring clasp and extender with a tiny dangling heart.

Kaylee has an affinity for strawberries, and this is jlkconcepts' non-literal, feminine interpretation of strawberries as inspired by Kaylee's sweetness and brightness. Made with all genuine materials, including sterling silver chain and wire; gold-fill chain, wire, beads and clasp; pink topaz, onion-faceted briolette focal bead; peridot faceted rondelles and briolette beads; freshwater pearls; and rose quartz faceted heart-shaped briolette beads. Tiny clear faceted glass beads are stitched with pink thread around a metal bangle. Stitched into the rim of the bangle are adorable soft pink pointy beads, and metallic pink seed beads. Reminiscent of the frippery of the ruffled hoopskirt of a country girl at her first ball, her dress looking like a strawberry layer cake (but only in the most charming sense)! Inner diameter is 2.75 in./7 cm, outer diameter is 3.75 in/9.6 cm.

Kaywinnit Lee Frye by Triplelle


Kaywinnit Lee Frye, aka Kaylee, is the disarmingly open, mechanically-inclined, earthy mechanic of a Firefly class cargo ship called Serenity. She's the heart of the ship, beloved mei mei to the captain, with a conviction that the 'Verse is basically a shiny place, a sensual fondness for strawberries (hard to come by when your home has no soil or sunlight) and an attraction to all things pink, frilly, and incredibly girly...though mostly she wears coveralls and a layer of engine grime. The necklace and earrings are constructed from washers, copper wire, and pink Swarovski crystal beads. The focal part of the necklace features more of the same, plus a lampworked strawberry bead (made in my studio and annealed for strength), and a solid sterling silver tag stamped with the word "SHINY". Closure is a J-hook formed of copper, easy to close and to wear.

Oh So Kaylee by NightMaiden


This focal is a large silver key to represent Kaylee as the key to the ship. Being the mechanic, it runs to the turn of her hands. The small charms at the top are a silver open heart to show the love for everyone on the crew, a strawberry for her favorite thing to eat, and another key just to show her position on the crew and how inportant she is. The necklace itself is made up of pink and white cats eye beads to represent the colors of her layer dress that she loved so much as well as her favorite color. This piece measures 15" in length and the silver key focal has a drop of 2 1/2".

Kaylees Delight - Crocheted Stuffed Strawberry by scarywhitegirl


Kaylee loves strawberries (don't we all?), and this strawberry would be her ultimate delight. The strawberry and leaves are crocheted from 100% acrylic yarn, while the seeds are stitched on with 100% cotton yarn. It's stuffed with polyfil and measures approximately 4" tall (10 cm), and is 6 3/4" (17 cm) in circumference at the widest point.

These cute earrings are a tribute to Kaywinnett Lee Frye, the mechanic on Serenity. Adorable lampwork strawberries topped with pressed glass leaves with aurora shine to them. They hang a little over 1".

Kaylee by bluepebble


A sweet necklace that combines a lovely pink focal bead with a copper chain. Inspired by the character of Kaylee from the Firefly TV series - Kaylee is the adorable mechanic of the ship and she tries to be feminine in a traditionally masculine position. Copper is used to represent Kaylee's mechanical side and pink beads (Kaylee's favourite colour!) Chain measures 15.5" (39.4 cm), but with bead, the necklace length is 17" (43.2 cm).

Serenity Love in the Verse journal by ladyartisan


Made it to represent the love that the Firefly characters had for being free, out in space and their love for the ship itself. The book is 132 pages of red and brick red Canson Mi Teintes pastel paper and measures 6 3/4" x 5 1/4" x 1". The covers are book boards covered with black velvet book cloth and the spine is covered with a silver leather, wrinkled in spots, and not perfectly even on the edges. The headband and endband are made with leftover velvet book cloth and there is an attached bookmark made from thin black suede lacing. The endpapers are Indian Batik paper in black and red. The front cover is embellished with the Chinese pin yin characters for "serenity" which is covered with a large black metal and glass watch bezel (2" diameter).

BDC Challenge for March

This months Character for the challenge is Kaylee and the Challenge title is "Frivolous Flippery and Engine Grease."

So get your brains a workin' on this one. Make an item that shows a bit of Kaylee in it. Maybe yours will have pink or strawberries, or wrenches or a heart the size of Osiris, or even a layer cake dress. There are so many things that say Kaylee!!

Begin posting your items after March 1st until March 19th (as always the "due date" is not set in stone). Those of you who are still working on your Febuary items, please feel free to share them with the group when you are done and we will continue to post February challenge items on this blog as well.

The perfect way to celebrate a love of Firefly - the ship Serenity has been put on to shrink plastic, colored with red and yellow, and made into a necklace charm. The matching bracelet features the Serenity kanji inside a red and yellow heart. BDH - An ACEO by Figments


BDH, or Big Damn Heroes, is Figment's entry in the February BDC challenge. This ACEO is a tribute to Firefly/Serenity. The base is 22 gauge steel and it measures 2.5" x 3.5", standard ACEO size. Shiny! Two tiny revolvers, a temperature gauge, Buddha, a key and a train wheel join the kanji symbols for Serentiy on this fun piece. And the number in the upper right indicates the Number 1 ranking of Firefly and Serenity in the hearts of the fans.

Browncoat Floral Kaylee Polymer Clay Beads by valeriebeads


Rather than pick the obvious, valeriebeads went with the episode she loves the most, which involves Kaylee and a big fluffy pink dress. Kaylee loved that dress, and it stood for a world that she rarely got to be a part of. So, in honor of the episode "Shindig" valeriebeads presents her BDC challenge piece. The beads measure approximately 13mm and feature a tiny signature cane near the hole. These beads are glossed to give them shine. Proud to be a Browncoat Necklace by Siarh


This necklace shows off Siarh's love of being a browncoat. 19" necklace made of Latte Jasper, malachite, and yellow adventurite beads with pewter accents. The yellow and green come from the browncoat patch from the war against the Alliance. The brown...that's quite obvious. The pendant is fastened to the necklace by a start-shaped bead, symbolizing the single star in the middle of the above-mentioned patch.
